I completed this Event the second time it occurred. There were differences in the reward and costs from the first time it ran.
It is not advisable to attempt this Event and expect to finish if you are below Level 40 and you do not plan on using Rubies.
The main draw to this event is the chance to gain a lot of rubies and Kingsguards which you can do and not finish the event. You will spend a lot of resources and coins. If you have a lot of resources and coins and not a lot of rubies or access to Kingsguards it's the event for you.
If you have a lot of rubies and you want the helmet by all means go for it, it is an item you won't get any other way.
The Thorn King Event is basically set up similar to that of the Map Adventures that are unlocked by finding pieces from victories over Robber Baron Castles. You are playing alone and the towers you attack do not attack back. There is a month to finish and you can go at your own pace.
The Thorn King returns OCT. 2013
There have been a lot of nice additions to this event. Some additional
rewards and it seems more doable for lower levels considering resources.
We will start from the beginning. You will need to spend
some resources to enter the Event.
Food – 5,000
Wood –10,000
Stone – 10,000
Coins – 5,000
If that already seems a lot for you, then this may not be
the time for you to go. When you arrive you will have 3000 of each resource
waiting for you at your camp. This is what you main tent can hold (It is like the Keep.) Then you must build your camp. It is advisable to
follow the quests that are very specific until you get more general ones a bit
later on.
Holds 5 soldiers |
Holds 7,500 resources |
+20 morale |
You will start with a main tent and a square of territory. You must use resources to stretch out your campsite and to add tents, storage and drill grounds, which are morale boosters. They can increase your fighting power.
In the Thorn King you may not bring over any commander equipment and the towers and resources villages you will attack have no castellan bonuses.
In addition to these non-ruby items, you can purchase their stronger equivalent with rubies.
The Hunter's Camp is like a bakery for the camp. It reduces your food consumption. Also there is a larger tent that holds 10 troops.
NEW: Unlike the previous Event, the tents can now be upgraded to level 2, doubling their capacity to hold troops. In the past if you need more troops you had to stretch your campsite (costing resources) and then build another tent. This way you can upgrade using the same space but it's double the resources.
Ruby version of drill grounds |
For decorative items (morale boosters) you have different versions at two different prices for rubies and resources. You can buy as many of these as you want and as many storage units as you need. The camp produces only 200 food per hour, so if you are bringing over troops that eat 4 an hour, then you can feed the max of 50 before your food goes in the red.
Tip: Build a few storage facilities to give you some leeway to go over your max, because you will need a lot more than 50 troops to complete the event.
Also, every new tent you build your morale drops (like PO with dwellings) so you will have to continue to counter that with the drill grounds (morale).
Let's take a look at what you will do after you set up your camp. You will receive Quests that tell you what to build and you will get resources to keep you going for a while. Then you will receive a Quest that tells you to attack your first tower. Let's take a look at the job you have ahead of you.
Above your camp leads on one path to your first tower to attack.Stretching out from your towers are resource villages, they increase in difficulty as you progress.
Blocked village |
Once you finish 3 towers you will be able to repair your first bridge.
New: Instead of one really expensive bridge to rebuild (it was 80k of wood and 80k of stone) they have split it up into several smaller bridges and then a big one, so that you can gradually contribute resources instead of being stopped at the middle and unable to progress.
You will have to repair at least 3 to get to all the next towers. The middle one you can take either path.
Quest to repair bridge |
Big bridge |
So wait, will the game give me enough resources to fix these bridges? How do I get all these resources.
The idea of the game is for you to attack resources villages to get enough resources to build all your tents and repair your bridges. That can be done if you are very active. Here is what you get on the first RV.
New: You now get tokens that you can trade in for prizes (will illustrate further down) ala Nomad Event. Previously you received rubies after attacks but the tokes have replaced them. This use to be an event where you could accumulate 500-700 rubies, which was a draw to the non-ruby buyer. I have yet to see if the tokens are better. You still get rubies after finishing quests though.
And we remember how much a tent and drill ground costs:
If you don't have enough time to keep attacking the RVs to gain resources for your tents and your bridge repair you can always send over resources from Evergreen. However it is not cheap to do so. Like when going to other kingdoms there is a tax, so to speak on resources you send over.
A heavy one:
Everything you transfer, resources or troops takes two hours travel time, unless you use rubies to arrive immediately. You can only send what your storage can hold, and you can only send troops as to what you have enough space for them to sleep (ie. tents). One mild inconvenience is you can only transfer from your main castle, which means you have to move your market barrows from your outpost to your main.
Note: when you win troops (KingsGuards) and you go over your camp size limit, it's okay. So if I have 5 small tents, which is room for 25 troops, and I defeat my 4th tower, I can receive 20 more for completing the Quest. However, I cannot send over additional troops until I get space for over 45 my max that I can hold. One WARNING: Don't be caught without tools. If you have 45 troops and only 25 beds, they can continue to fight but if you have no tools you cannot send any over until you have built 50 beds. This happened to me, The Quest gave me 150 troops to add to about 75 I still had, but had no tools. I was housing 225 troops with only 150 beds, and no tools. I had plenty of troops to continue my attacks but had to either build the additional tents to allow me to send over more troops w/tools or buy ruby tools. I expected to lose a lot more troops than I did and did not plan accordingly. It was a time wasting mistake.
Sending over troops is something you will likely have to do. Unless you are that good at attacking, and hopefully towards the end you will be come a lot better, you will likely need extras then what is provided for you. Level 5 barracks and up will be fine. I don't really recommend anything less powerful. It is expensive.

Ruby troops and tools will have tents appear inside your campsite to entice you to go that faster route to finish the event. You are given 4 weeks to finish the event so manage your time.
Who you will be fighting:
And there is also this little guy:
A cow is hiding |
Lowbow Ox - 92 ranged attack, 51 melee defense, 125 ranged defense
Cowberries - 109 melee attack, 135 melee defense, 45 ranged defense
Defeating the cow tower will give you resources and likely tokens plus you will be able to complete an achievement doing so.
Now where are we. we are approaching the Necromancer's tower
Once you get to the last tower you win the reward. You don't have to defeat all the towers to receive the decoration. But there are quests that give you more troops and loot if you defeat all the towers and you can go back and get more tokens.
Ultimate Prize to complete the Thorn King:
decoration worth 198 PO |
The Death Grin was the prize from the last Event, and I have to admit I really like it. I have my eye on some of the other pieces, so it might very well be worth losing the rubies and gaining the tokens.
Happy hunting, and go at your own pace and ask for help in game. I won't post military reports as the fun is to figure it out yourself, but if you are having a hard time, I can send it to you in game to give you a little boost if I have solved that specific tower.
